It's official: Meghan Markle's royal wedding hairstyle of choice was the messy bun. Just as her husband had, the Duchess of Sussex stuck to a signature look for the big day, and her hairstylist Serge Normant-who met Meghan through friends last year-is spilling all the details about the famous updo.
"It's a messy bun, we call it. Messy in a controlled way, making sure it doesn't become a whole mess after a few hours!" he confirmed this morning at Windsor. The Parisian New York City-based stylist added that it took 45 minutes to coif the royal bride's hair.
While some were critical of the bride's fuss-free 'do, Serge embraced Meghan's casual approach to hair, and both of them were on the same page from the get-go. “Her style is so easy and not contrived,” he explains. “I wasn't about reinvention. She has a beautiful head of hair and is gorgeous, so it was just easy.” He stressed the importance of maintaining her hair's natural luster and not going overboard with the styling. "I don't overload the hair with products in general and certainly not on this day," he says.
Serge was so committed to the bride's hair, he dreamed up an inspiration board and even had a famous muse in mind. "I always think of icons I love, like Audrey Hepburn, all those styles that I still love," he explains. "I always have little '60s inspirations in my head, but I didn't want to do anything set in a time frame." He also notes that he didn't want Meghan's updo to be too voluminous and that those loose strands were intentional. "I wanted something very loose and easy which is why we chose a very loose bun… I wanted her to be able to tuck it behind her ears if she wanted to because that is what she normally does." According to Serge, the bride was happy with the final look-and we can all agree that the finishing touch completed the gorgeous bridal hairstyle.
